The Importance of a Good Retrospective

The Agile Coach House In order to value individuals and interactions over processes and tools, we need to ensure that the Scrum events we run encourage conversation and collaboration. One of the agile principles is “At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly,” and so retros should be one of our highest priorities as team coaches. As a developer, I was infuriated by the death march of retrospectives facilitated by our Scrum Masters. We were expected to come up with good, bad, and changes at the end of every sprint without any prompting other than being asked a question. Unsurprisingly, it was rare that anything new ever came up. People would happily not come to the meeting because it rarely delivered any value. Esther Derby and others have done fantastic work on how to plan and run retrospectives. In this talk, I take the audience through this model, discussing why each stage is important and the value it delivers. I give facilitation tips and create a retro plan as I go along so people can see how to put the theory discussed into practice.
